MBIA is very active in the housing sector especially in military housing both in the U.S. and the U.K. Other areas of the housing practice include single family, multifamily and FHA insured structures (multifamily and healthcare). MBIA’s housing portfolio is approximately $17 billion.
The military housing sector began to develop in the late 1990s in the U.S. when the National Defense Authorization Act allowed the Department of Defense and the military services to work with the private sector to build and renovate family housing to improve the quality of life for U.S. service personnel and their families. MBIA has been a leader in this sector insuring over 20 transactions in the primary and secondary market under the military housing privatization initiative. Today, military housing is a $16 billion market, of which 78% is insured. MBIA has guaranteed approximately 60% of the insured market. Since 2001, MBIA’s portfolio of military housing transactions has grown to approximately $8 billion.
